What is Family Promise?

Family Promise of Cabarrus County is being formed to provide families without adequate housing the opportunity to maintain a family unit and work towards independence. With the help of volunteers and houses of worship, fourteen people are provided access to phones, social services, job counseling, nutritious meals, and a safe place to sleep. The Family Promise Network will consist of fourteen host churches. These churches open their doors for one week at a time, about four times a year to the families that are in the network. The churches provide dinner for the guests, entertainment or educational events, worship opportunities, a place to sleep, a quick breakfast, and a bag lunch for the next day. Support churches, which are unable to serve as hosts due to space limitations, provide volunteers to assist host churches.

The Network program is a collaborative effort: houses of worship provide rooms for overnight shelter; social service agencies refer homeless families and provide a family center, and the congregations supply the volunteers. Because existing resources are used, a Network is cost efficient, having no need for a sizeable paid staff, facility constructions or renovation cost.

Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis has offered to rent the "scout hut" building on their property to Family Promise of Cabarrus County for use as a day center. The day center offers families a permanent address, access to telephones, showers and laundry facilities during the day.
